The Wildlife Center of Texas Oiled Wildlife Response Team has had a busy 2012. The team members have responded to several drills and spills along the gulf coast. Thirty-five team members have completed their eight hour refresher course for their 24-hour and 40-hour HAZWOPER certification. WCT has already presented two oiled wildlife response workshops this year with plans for 8 more workshops along the gulf coast. The workshops illustrate what is involved in oiled wildlife response. Topics include the laws that protect wildlife, incidence command system, effects of oil on wildlife and humans, correct procedures for capturing, handling, washing and after care of oiled wildlife.
Eighty interested participants attended the oiled wildlife workshop in Houston at The Wildlife Center of Texas. The workshop was sponsored by Anadarko and gave all great insight as to what is involved when an event occurs.
Workshop participants were shown proper wildlife handling techniques to keep both handler and animal safe.
Participants have hands on-training by donning the proper personal protection equipment and washing an oiled feather.
WCT staff demonstrate proper washing techniques on unoiled domestic ducks who are willing participants in the cleaning.
Clean Gulf Associates provided the oiled wildlife response trailer for the Anadarko sponsored workshop. Workshop participants learned the importance of a good rinse in cleaning oiled feathers.
